So many
good things have been happening. I'd like to
share a few of them with you.
As
Franklin County Treasurer, I am fortunate to
work with an extremely talented staff committed
to serving the public. Last week was full of
examples of this:
As a way to educate
people about the importance of saving, even a
little bit at a time, we sponsor "Roll Your
Change Week." At venues throughout the county,
we invite folks to bring in their loose change,
and our staff and co-sponsors help count and
wrap it, then work with consumers to set up
formal savings process. Last week one gentleman
came to us with 30 years' worth of pennies!
(Shown in photo at right.)
With Ohio
leading the nation in home foreclosure rates,
our office has been very active in working with
people in our community who are particularly
vulnerable to predatory lending, such as
seniors or families with little or no credit
history. We learned that some lenders were
using land contract schemes to exploit Latino
families. To attack that program, last week we
cosponsored an educational forum with realtors
from the Latino community.
Also last
week, my office joined Montgomery County
Treasurer Hugh Quill, Clerk of Courts Dan
Foley, and Dayton Mayor Rhine McClin in a
statewide seminar on how local officials can
help stem this epidemic of home foreclosures in
Ohio.
Last Friday I was honored to
speak to the national Society of Municipal
Analysts at their annual meeting in Cleveland.
As representatives of the bond rating agencies
and financial officials, this group is in tune
with our state's financial health and
influencial in helping communities manage their
debt, and therefore the bottom line for
taxpayers.
One of the most gratifying
things about being Franklin County Treasurer is
the opportunity to serve the public in ways
that are practical and useful. Whether it's
helping someone transfer 30 years of pennies
from a big jar to a savings account, or to hold
on to their home, those small steps can lead to
meaningful change--and I am grateful to the
dedicated employees of the Franklin County
Treasurer's office for helping to make that
happen.

With so
many great candidates for federal, state, and
local office, there are countless opportunities
to get out and work for the Democratic Ticket.
The Cordray Campaign is fortunate to have staff
and volunteers who are working for many
candidates and are also willing to
multitask--by helping us with our visibility
efforts while attending rallies or events for
other candidates.
Samantha Simpson, a
Cordray staffer who comes from the 21st Century
Democrats training program, shows how this is
done: She's shown in the phototo the right with
James Carville, holding her Cordray sign (good
job, Samantha!) The photo was taken last week
at a rally at OSU for Senate Candidate Sherrod
Brown and Congressional Candidate Mary Jo
Kilroy. Actor Luke Perry headlined the student
rally, and yes, Samantha got his picture, too!
